In 1589, the Flemish geographer and map maker Abraham Ortelius created the first map to focus on the Pacific Ocean, titles titled "Maris Pacifici," and just east of the Strait of Magellan, Ortelius added an illustration of Ferdinand Magellan's nao Victoria, the one ship from Magellan's five-carrack fleet to return from Asia via the Cape of Good Hope—making it the first ship to sail around the world. Beneath the ship, Ortelius gave it a quote: "I was the first to sail around the world, and it was I who guided you, Magellan, to cross the Strait. I dared, and deservedly I am called VICTORY: my sails are wings; my prize is glory; my battle, the ocean.”
